Nature and landscape

Innvik is beautifully situated along the fjord, while Utvik lies further west where the fjord opens up with wide views both further in and out of Nordfjorden. Both villages are located along National Road 60, between Olden and Utvikfjellet, and are easily accessible for travellers in the region.

The landscape is characterised by green hillsides, fruit farms, and mountains rising above the fjord. Here you will find a living cultural landscape where agriculture and fruit growing are still strong, and where people have lived in close interaction with nature for generations.

Activities

Innvik and Utvik offer varied hiking opportunities, from easy walks to mountain hikes with magnificent views over the fjord. The cultural trail in Innvik is an easy circular walk of about 3.2 kilometres that takes you through the village’s history, with stops including Innvik Church, the vicarage, and the old church site at Hilde.

For those who want to get up higher, Øvresetstøylen on Utvikfjellet is a popular hiking destination. From here you get wide views towards Våtedalen, Breim, and down towards Sandane. The trip is suitable for both walkers and cyclists from the car park at Breim Skisenter.

In summer you can swim and fish in the fjord, while winter offers great skiing experiences on Utvikfjellet with both an alpine resort and cross-country ski trails.

Culture and history

Innvik and Utvik have long traditions in agriculture, crafts, and travel. Innvik was previously its own municipality and a centre in Indre Nordfjord, while Utvik was an important hub for travel over the mountains and onwards across the fjord.

A distinctive feature of Innvik is its industrial history linked to textile production. The old Innvik Woollen Mill, established in 1890, is today an important cultural heritage site and one of the largest wooden buildings in Europe. Here you can experience exhibitions and events that provide insight into local industrial history.

The churches in the villages are also worth a visit. Innvik Church from 1822 is an octagonal wooden church, while Utvik Church from 1840 is beautifully located near the fjord.

Accommodation and local amenities

In Innvik and Utvik you will find good accommodation options close to the fjord, with a short distance to both nature and activities. In Utvik, Fransøyra Cabin Rental is located right by the shoreline, with modern cabins, good fishing opportunities, and proximity to varied hiking terrain in forest and mountains. In Innvik, Innvik Fjordhotel is idyllically situated by the water’s edge, with a restaurant and terrace overlooking the fjord, and a great starting point for trips in the Nordfjord region.

In both villages you will find grocery stores and simple dining options. In Innvik, Skogstad has its own outlet with clothing for both everyday wear and outdoor life, with roots going back to 1937 and inspiration drawn from the nature of Nordfjord.
