When is a good time to travel to Nordfjord?

Nordfjord has highlights all year round. Each season offers unique experiences – from summer skiing to winter surfing. And the other way around. Almost everything is possible almost all year in Nordfjord.

Winter (November–March)

Winter in Nordfjord is for those who want winter adventures without the big crowds.

In Stryn you’ll find ski resorts and summit tours. Loen Skylift is open all winter and offers snow-covered mountains and views you’ll never forget. Hotel Alexandra and Hotel Loenfjord have spa and wellness after a day in the mountains.

At Hjelle by Oppstrynsvatnet you can experience a true Norwegian winter atmosphere. Sauna by the lake, quiet landscapes, northern lights on clear evenings.

Stad is surprisingly beautiful in winter. Surfing winter waves for the brave. Dramatic storms seen from Vestkapp for everyone else. In Nordfjordeid there is a ski centre, cross-country trails, and an exciting cultural offering.

In Bremanger and Gloppen, winter is quiet and beautiful. Perfect for a relaxed weekend with great food at Knutholmen or Gloppen Hotell.

Spring (April and May)

Spring in Nordfjord is for those who want nature to themselves. The waterfalls roar like never otherwise, snow still lies in the mountains, and the landscape opens up again after winter.

In Stryn you can ski at Stryn Sommerski while the valleys below are green. Oldedalen and Lodalen come alive with meltwater waterfalls and spring flowers.

On Stadlandet there are still good waves for surfing, but fewer people in the water. Hoddevik and Ervik offer spectacular conditions. In Nordfjordeid, the world’s largest Viking ship is launched, and the Viking and saga activities are often open in spring.

In Bremanger, several places are open, so you can enjoy the landscape at exciting places to stay along the coast.

In Gloppen, Kandalen comes to life – with a dairy, restaurant, and accommodation.

Summer (June, July and August)

Summer is peak season, and for good reason. Long, bright days. All attractions open. Beaches at their best.

But did you know you can experience just as much without standing in line? While most people travel to Loen Skylift and Briksdalsbreen, gems like Kjenndalen, Bødalen and Erdalen are waiting. Or try Via Ferrata in Loen or on Hornelen – both are open in summer and offer spectacular experiences.

On Stad you’ll find some of Norway’s best surfing beaches. Hoddevik is well known, but also try Ervika for a more local experience. Feel free to travel to Selja monastery and experience the island’s history at Norway’s far western edge. In Nordfjordeid, Sagastad is open, and you have a unique opportunity to experience Viking history.

Grotlesanden in Bremanger is Norway’s answer to the Caribbean. But did you know that Iglandsvik – just a short drive away – offers equally fine sand and far fewer people? And in Kalvåg you’ll find authentic coastal culture and great seafood at Knutholmen.

In Gloppen you can stay among the treetops at Engeset Trehytter near Sandane, or bring the family to Kandalen – with a dairy, restaurant and family-friendly activities. Gloppen is family-friendly with several campsites, including a campsite with a pool, Trivselsskogen and fun activities at Nordfjord Folkemuseum.

Autumn (September–October)

Autumn is Nordfjord’s best-kept secret. The tourists have gone home. The autumn colours explode in the valleys. And the food? Often at its best.

The shellfish is at its very best when you visit restaurants in Bremanger and Stad. The apples are ripe. In Gloppen and Stryn you can visit farms that sell apples, cider and local specialties.

Take a food trip to Kalvåg and Knutholmen for the freshest seafood. Or visit Sandane and experience Nordfjord Smak’s producers.

On Stad, the autumn storms are spectacular. Watch the waves crash in toward Vestkapp – or relax for a weekend in Nordfjordeid.

Oldedalen and Lodalen in autumn colours are among the most beautiful things you can experience in Norway. Perfect for photographers and nature lovers.
