Nordfjord is a compact region with short distances between fjord, mountains and coast. It is possible to experience both glacier areas and seascapes on the same day, and many driving stages between the towns take around 1–2 hours. This makes it easy to combine different experiences without long transport days.

A few things to keep in mind when driving in Nordfjord

  • In some places in Nordfjord, the roads are winding and narrow, especially along fjords, lakes and toward the coast. Drive slowly and be considerate.
  • In winter, mountain passes and smaller roads may be closed or require winter tires and snow chains. Drive carefully!
  • Some routes in the region include ferry connections. Check timetables in advance, especially outside the summer season.
  • Grazing animals along the roads are common in summer. Stay alert and adjust your speed.
  • Distances are moderate, but not all towns have a 24-hour gas station or fast charging.

Approximate driving times between key points in the region

  • Stryn – Nordfjordeid: approx. 1 hour
  • Nordfjordeid – Kalvåg: approx. 1 hour
  • Nordfjordeid – Hoddevik: approx. 1 hour
  • Stryn – Kalvåg: approx. 2 hours
  • Stryn – Hoddevik: approx. 2 hours

Distances and travel time may vary depending on route choice, traffic and weather.

Car

Nordfjord has a well-developed road network, but several roads are narrow and winding, especially along the fjords and towards the coast. Adjust your speed and show consideration for oncoming traffic. Parking is usually free in the region, but on private property separate rules may apply. Follow the signage on site.

There are several charging stations in the region. We recommend using digital map services or charging maps for an up-to-date overview of location and capacity. Here you will find an overview of charging stations

Some routes in Nordfjord have ferry connections. This applies especially along the coast and in the outer parts of the region. We recommend checking timetables and departures before setting off, especially outside the summer season.

Updated information can be found at Fjord1.

Motorhome

Nordfjord is a popular travel destination for motorhome tourists. We recommend using established campsites and motorhome parking areas.

Emptying greywater and toilets must be done at approved disposal stations. This helps protect nature and the local community.

See the dedicated page for an overview of disposal stations, motorhome parking and rules for staying with a motorhome in Nordfjord.

Public transport

It is possible to travel by bus between several towns in the region. The service varies throughout the year.

Plan your trip and check updated timetables at Fram.no.

The Glacier Bus to Briksdalsbreen

During the summer season, the Glacier Bus runs from Stryn to Briksdalsbreen. This is a simple option for those who want to visit the glacier without their own car.

The Glacier Bus operates in the period May–August. We recommend checking timetables and booking in advance.
