Coastal life and history

Kalvåg lies at the outer edge of the island of Frøya in Bremanger, surrounded by the open sea, islets, and a vibrant coastal environment. In the 1800s, this was one of the largest fishing villages in Western Norway, bustling with fishing, trade, and activity.

Today, much of the history has been preserved through restored boathouses and fishermen’s cabins. Around the small bay, buildings stand closely packed, creating a truly special setting for the experience of being here.

Kalvåg has developed into a lively coastal community, where you live close to the sea, history, and nature. Here, everyday life and tourism go hand in hand, and it’s easy to feel the calm while having great experiences right outside the door.

Nature and landscape

The landscape around Kalvåg is marked by contrasts between the open sea, small islands and gentle coastal forms. Here, nature is always close, and the light and weather shift quickly throughout the day.

Very nearby you’ll find Grotlesanden – one of the finest sandy beaches in Western Norway, with white sand and open views towards the open ocean. This is also where the hike to Veten starts, offering wide views over sea and coastal scenery.

Another special place is Vetvika, where a chalk-white beach meets an azure-blue sea and steep mountains. The hike there is a longer walk, which means you can often experience the place in silence and peace.

Out on the edge of the ocean lies the storm shelter Dosabu, where you can experience the forces of nature up close. Here you sit protected, while the waves crash and the wind grips around you – an experience that gives a completely new impression of the coast.

Activities

Kalvåg offers experiences both at sea and on land.
Around the fishing village there are several hiking trails suitable for both short and longer trips, with views over the sea and islands. Here you can explore the coastal landscape at your own pace.

From the sea, you can join guided boat tours, where you get close to both nature and wildlife. With experienced boat operators, you can experience everything from calm trips along the coast to more high-speed adventures out on the open sea.

For many, however, one of the best things about Kalvåg is precisely taking it easy – strolling along the wharves, sitting by the sea, or experiencing the quiet rhythm of a living fishing village.

In Kalvåg you’ll find space for several peaceful experiences. From the floating sauna Kok og Bad you can enjoy the view over the sea, fishermen’s cabins and small boats. The combination of a warm sauna and a refreshing dip in the sea creates a truly special coastal experience.
