Nature and landscape

The landscape around Svelgen is dramatic and full of contrasts. The area is one of the wettest in Europe, which brings life to a network of waterfalls and rivers that shape the nature throughout the year.

Close by lies Ålfotbreen, one of the westernmost and most ocean-influenced glaciers in Norway. Here you encounter an untouched and powerful landscape with a completely unique shelf landscape in Devonian sandstone, shaped by 400 million-year-old mountain remnants. The nature is wild and magnificent, giving a feeling of being far away from everyday life.

Activities and experiences

Svelgen is a great starting point for experiences both in the mountains and by the fjord. Here you will find hiking opportunities for all levels, both short walks and longer mountain hikes with views over fjord and mountains.

A nice way to get to know the place is the cultural heritage trail, a circular route with several stops that tells the story of the development from a farming community to an industrial town.

In Ålfoten, close to Svelgen, you can visit Hjortegarden, a unique experience close to nature and wildlife. Here you can get close to the deer and take part in activities such as feeding and simple farm experiences in beautiful surroundings.

The area also offers good opportunities for fishing, paddling, and nature experiences along the fjord. For those who want more of a challenge, there is climbing and bouldering in several difficulty levels in the surrounding area.

Culture and history

Svelgen has a history shaped by water and industry. From a small village, the place grew during the 20th century, driven by the power from the waterfalls. Today, industry still characterizes both the landscape and the local community, and along the cultural heritage trail you can experience the history up close.

In the area you will also find some of the most unique cultural heritage sites in the region. Vingen, Nature’s Colossal Museum, is one of the largest rock-carving fields in the Nordic countries, with thousands of figures from the Stone Age. The area is protected and can only be visited with a guide – a journey several thousand years back in time.

Along the coast in Botnane you will find both the Poet’s Path and the impressive burial cairns from the Bronze Age. Here you can experience nature, history, and literature side by side, in an open and weather-exposed coastal landscape.
