Welcome to the idyllic village of Loen

Loen is a small village at the very end of Nordfjord, but it offers world-class experiences. Here you’ll find forest-covered hills and distinctive mountains with snow-clad peaks rising straight up from the silvery, shimmering Nordfjord. With short distances between fjord, valley, and mountain peak, Loen is a destination that stays with you—and makes it hard not to want to come back.

Just a short distance beyond Loen lies Lodalen—often described as one of the most beautiful valleys in Norway. The vivid green Lovatnet is surrounded by steep mountains and a dramatic history that has left deep traces.

All year round

Spring

Spring in Loen and Lodalen is a time when nature awakens to life. The snow melts in the mountains, the waterfalls roar, and the valleys turn green. This is a great time for peaceful walks along the fjord or in the valley, and to experience nature before the summer season begins.

Summer

Summer is the peak season in Loen. Here you can experience the Loen Skylift, climb Via Ferrata, paddle a kayak on the fjord, or explore Lodalen and Lovatnet. The long, bright evenings offer great opportunities for mountain hikes and outdoor activities.

Autumn

Autumn colours the landscape in warm tones. The mountain slopes around Loen and Lodalen turn golden and red, and the air becomes fresh and clear. This is a perfect time for mountain hikes, cycling, and peaceful nature experiences.

Winter

Winter brings a quiet, atmospheric landscape around Loen. Snow-covered mountains frame the fjord, and the Loen Skylift takes you up to Hoven where you can enjoy the winter scenery, go sledding, take walks, or experience the mountains on skis.

Nature and landscape

Loen is surrounded by tall, distinctive mountains with snow-covered peaks that rise straight up from the silvery surface of Nordfjorden. The contrasts are great, but the distances are short. Here you can experience fjord, valley and high mountains in the same day.

Further in from the village, Lodalen opens up, often described as one of the most beautiful valleys in Norway. The vivid green Lovatnet lies like a mirror between steep mountainsides, waterfalls and lush nature. The special colour comes from meltwater and glacial particles from Jostedalsbreen.

At the far end of the valley lies Kjenndalsbreen, the lowest glacier arm of Jostedalsbreen. The trip here is an experience in itself, with a beautiful drive along the lake and a short walk up to the glacier. Along Lovatnet you will also find the charming mountain pasture Breng, a popular stop for both photographers and hikers.

Towering above the village is Skåla (1848 m a.s.l.), known for Norway’s longest continuous uphill climb from fjord to summit. At the top you can stay overnight in the historic Skålatårnet or the DNT cabin Skålabu and enjoy the view towards Nordfjorden and Jostedalsbreen.

Culture and history

Lodalen bears a dramatic history that still leaves its mark on the area. In 1905 and 1936, large masses of rock slid from Ramnefjellet into Lovatnet and created flood waves that destroyed the villages of Nesdal and Bødal. In total, 135 people lost their lives. The Lodalen disaster is one of the greatest natural catastrophes in Norwegian history, and a walk through the valley gives a powerful insight into the events.

On the top of Skåla lies Skålatårnet, built in 1891 by the physician Hans Henrik Gerhard Kloumann as a place of recreation in fresh mountain air. Today, it is one of the best-known tourist cabins in Norway.

Hotel Alexandra has welcomed guests since 1884 and is one of the country’s most traditional hotels. Here, historic charm meets modern comfort, with a spa and facilities in beautiful surroundings by the fjord.

Activities and nature experiences

Loen Skylift takes you from fjord level to the top of Hoven (1011 m a.s.l.) in just five minutes. Here, a spectacular panoramic view awaits you over fjords, mountains and valleys. At the top you’ll find marked trails, Hoven Restaurant and a zipline – where you can soar over the landscape in safe conditions.

For those wanting more excitement, Via Ferrata Loen is a highlight. The climbing route takes you along the mountainside towards the top of Hoven, and along the way you cross Gjølmunnebrua – Europe’s longest via ferrata bridge, 120 metres long and a full 750 metres above sea level.

In Lodalen, a wide range of activities awaits. Here you can go hiking, cycle, or paddle a kayak, canoe and SUP on the emerald-green Lovatnet. The area is also perfect for peaceful nature experiences – such as a picnic by the water or a quiet evening in the mountains.

Loen Active offers guided kayak tours, mountain hikes, bike rental and activities for both beginners and experienced guests. In winter, Hoven offers snowshoe hikes, summit tours and one of Norway’s longest toboggan runs – all set in a calm and beautiful winter landscape.

From spectacular gondola rides and airy climbing experiences to quiet paddling trips on Lovatnet. Loen offers contrasts and experiences for everyone.
