Fjord, waterfalls and glaciers at their most spectacular

Olden lies at the end of Nordfjorden, where the fjord meets one of the most beautiful valleys in Western Norway. Here begins the journey into Oldedalen – a place where nature feels bigger, wilder and closer than in most other places.

With towering mountains, powerful waterfalls and glacier arms stretching down towards the valley floor, this is a landscape that leaves an impression—whether you experience it on foot, from the water, or simply along the road.

All year round

Spring

The snowmelt sets waterfalls and rivers in motion, and the landscape becomes especially vibrant. The contrast between snow-covered peaks and budding green valleys makes this a beautiful time to visit the area.

Summer

Long, bright days provide perfect conditions for mountain hikes, glacier walks, and activities on the water. This is the peak season, and the valley fills with life from both Norwegian and international visitors.

Autumn

A calmer pace settles over the valley. The mountain slopes take on warm colors, the air becomes crisp, and the views extra sharp. An ideal time for hikes and nature experiences.

Winter

Nature becomes quieter and more dramatic. Snow settles in the mountains, and Oldedalen takes on a calm and almost fairy-tale atmosphere, where the contrasts between the white landscape and the dark fjord create a truly unique experience.

Nature and landscape

Oldedalen stretches about 20 kilometers from Olden and southwards toward Jostedalsbreen National Park. The valley is surrounded by steep mountain sides, deep valleys, and several glacier arms creeping down from the highlands, including Briksdalsbreen, Melkevollbreen, and Brenndalsbreen.

In the middle of the valley lies Oldevatnet, a long, narrow lake with a distinctive emerald-green color, created by meltwater from the glaciers. Here the mountains are reflected in the water’s surface, while the river Oldenelva continues out into Nordfjorden.

Traveling through Oldedalen is an experience in itself. Many describe the valley as one of the most fairy-tale landscapes in Norway, where waterfalls, glaciers, and shifting light constantly create new impressions. At the far end of the valley awaits Briksdalsbreen, which plunges dramatically down from the high mountains and into the lush Briksdalen. Its easily accessible location makes the glacier one of the most visited natural attractions in the country.

Culture and history

Although nature takes center stage, Olden also has an exciting history. One of the most distinctive stories is linked to the American couple William Henry Singer Jr. and Anna Brugh Singer. When they came to Olden in 1913, they fell in love with the landscape and chose to settle here.

The result was Singerheimen – a beautiful property with several distinctive green buildings surrounded by a lush garden. Today, the site is open to visitors, with guided tours and the opportunity to experience the history up close.

In the center of Olden you will also find both the new and the old church, bearing witness to a local community with long traditions.

Activities and nature experiences

Oldedalen is an eldorado for anyone who wants to be active outdoors in nature. Here you’ll find hikes for all levels, from easy strolls to more demanding mountain hikes.

The hike to Briksdalsbreen is the most famous. It follows a wide path through a dramatic landscape with waterfalls, rivers and steep mountain sides close by. Along the way, you’ll continually get new views of the glacier. For more hiking options, you can explore further into the valley. The hike to Gytrifossen is a nice, family-friendly trip through lush nature, where you get views of both the waterfall and the glacier along the way. If you want more elevation gain, the hike to Klovane offers spectacular views of fjord, water and glaciers.

On Oldevatnet you can paddle a kayak or canoe, or take a calm boat trip. In several places along the lake it’s possible to rent equipment, and the area is well suited for both short trips and longer experiences on the water.

For a more relaxing experience, you can visit Melkevoll Bretun, where the combination of nature, peace and wellbeing is at the centre, with offerings such as a sauna, yoga and ice bathing.

Olden and Oldedalen are places where nature truly takes centre stage. Whether you come to see a glacier up close, hike in one of Norway’s most spectacular valleys, or simply take in the view. Everything is set for experiences you’ll carry with you.
