History you can touch and feel

Nordfjord has a thousand years of maritime history, and in summer it comes to life. In Sandane in Gloppen you’ll find the Holvikejekta – the only preserved clinker-built jekt of its kind in Norway, built in 1881 using the same techniques as the Viking ships. A new museum around the jekt opened in 2025. Nearby, you’ll find the Nordfjord Folk Museum with 45 historic buildings.

In Nordfjordeid, Sagastad awaits with the reconstructed Myklebust Ship – the largest Viking ship anyone has ever found traces of in Norway. You can step on board and experience its size up close.

Furthest west, on the island of Selja, lie monastery ruins from the Middle Ages – one of the oldest Christian sanctuaries in Norway, and a journey that is, in itself, a small adventure by boat.

Up and down and around

Via Ferrata Loen takes you up the mountainside to the top of Hoven at 1,011 m above sea level, secured with a wire the entire way. At the top you meet the Loen Skylift, which takes you back down to fjord level in five minutes. At Hornelen in Bremanger – Europe’s highest sea cliff – you can challenge yourself on one of the most exposed via ferrata routes in the country.

For families, Hydlaparken in Stryn is a crowd-pleaser: treetop climbing courses, ziplines, a bike park, and something for all ages – built on a moraine from the Ice Age.

The summit hikes are a world of their own. From Loen, Olden, Stryn and Bremanger, there is access to some of the most beautiful mountain hikes in Western Norway. Trivselsskogen in Gloppen is a low-threshold option for family outings in nature.

Beach and water

Grotlesanden in Bremanger is Norway’s answer to the Caribbean. Iglandsvik nearby offers just as fine sand and far fewer people. Campsites throughout the region make it easy to stay close to nature – whether by fjord, lake, or sea.
