History you can touch and feel
Nordfjord has a thousand years of maritime history, and in summer it comes to life. In Sandane in Gloppen you’ll find the Holvikejekta – the only preserved clinker-built jekt of its kind in Norway, built in 1881 using the same techniques as the Viking ships. A new museum around the jekt opened in 2025. Nearby, you’ll find the Nordfjord Folk Museum with 45 historic buildings.
In Nordfjordeid, Sagastad awaits with the reconstructed Myklebust Ship – the largest Viking ship anyone has ever found traces of in Norway. You can step on board and experience its size up close.
Furthest west, on the island of Selja, lie monastery ruins from the Middle Ages – one of the oldest Christian sanctuaries in Norway, and a journey that is, in itself, a small adventure by boat.
