Rugsund

Rugsund is an old trading town on Rugsundøya in Bremanger. It has protected wooden buildings, with a small inn and a summer café.

General information

Surrounded by beautiful nature, the old trading town of Rugsund lies on the eastern tip of Rugsundøya in Bremanger. The trading history of Rugsund dates back to the early 1600s, when people from Bergen settled here. Through the 1700s and 1800s, the town was an important inn and a natural posting station and boat harbor for all of Nordfjord.

Changing merchant families operated general stores, bakeries, herring and fish businesses, sawmills and more from the town over the years. Today, among other things, two large boathouses, a shop, a storehouse and the old bakery remain. In 1924, the trading town was protected by the National Heritage Authority, and the buildings have since been restored and are in good condition.

Rugsund is today a peaceful and idyllic holiday destination. The harbor is frequently visited by boaters, and there are guest docks and service buildings. Rugsund Trading Town offers accommodation and has its own café in the summers. From Rugsund, there are several marked hiking trails to other parts of Rugsundøya, and the town is a good starting point for trips to the mountain Hornelen, Tongane coastal fort and the rock carving field at Vingen. After the mainland connection opened in 2002, you can easily reach Rugsund by car.
