The old Grotle churchyard in Bremanger
The old Grotle churchyard (Gamle Grotle kyrkjegard) lies by Grotlesanden in Bremanger and has a long and interesting history with graves dating back to the Middle Ages.General information
At Grotle in Bremanger you'll find one of the most unique cemeteries on the Nordfjord coast. The churchyard is surruonded by an old stone fence with open views towards the sea. Here you can walk among the many gravestones and learn about the history of this old churchyard.
What makes the cemetery special is its rich collection of gravestones. Nearly 100 gravestones are registered here, varying in age, material, size and shape. Many are made of locally found stone and several gravestones are positioned horizontally. The old Grotle Church, dating back to the 1300s, once stood here. The church was demolished in 1865 when a new church was built at Frøylandet, but the churchyard remained in use until 1902. In the cultural heritage year 1997, Grotle old churchyard was named Bremanger's cultural monument.
The churchyard has been restored and equipped with information boards and iron gates. There is parking and signage at the site, and a new, universally designed walking path leads down to the churchyard. The area is an open coastal landscape, so dress according to the weather. The area is open to the public, but please remember that this is an old graveyard, so show respect and step carefully during your visit.
