General information

At the far west of Rugsundøy lies Tongane Coastal Fort, one of the best preserved war monuments in Nordfjord. The fort is situated in an open and beautiful coastal landscape. Here you can walk freely among bunkers, an old cannon and war buildings, while learning about the dramatic history from World War II.

It was in autumn 1940 that the German navy started building the coastal fort on the western tip of Rugsundøy. The cannons at the coastal fort were built to reach targets in Vågsfjorden, and block the sea passage to Måløy and Nordfjord. When the fort was ready for combat in May 1941, it had a crew of 159 officers and soldiers.

After the German capitulation in 1945, the fort came under Norwegian Coastal Artillery before it was finally disbanded around 1950. One of the cannons remained along with the crew quarters, which in the years after the war was used as an house for gathering. Since 1998, Bremanger municipality, landowners and Tongane cultural association have collaborated on clearing paths and bunkers, and setting up information signs.

Today Tongane Coastal Fort is a freely accessible outdoor area you can visit on your own. You can park you car, follow the paths and explore the bunkers and the canon at your own pace, while information boards tell the story along the way. The area is typical coastal terrain, so wear good shoes and dress according to the weather.
