Welcome to Nordfjord, a unique destination with spectacular nature and vibrant local communities. We want to preserve this beautiful region, and hope you will follow the guidelines below when you visit us.
1. Don’t leave unnecessary traces in nature
Use marked trails and avoid pitching tents in vulnerable areas. Use existing fire pits, bring your own firewood, and follow the campfire ban from 15 April to 15 September.
2. Show respect for animals and plants
Be considerate of wildlife, especially during calving and nesting. Keep a good distance from wild animals, keep your dog on a leash, and leave rare flowers untouched. Berry picking is permitted in most areas – check local rules.
3. Take your litter with you and use toilet facilities
Always take all your rubbish with you and avoid using wet wipes, as these break down slowly. Find a toilet where possible, and take used toilet paper with you if facilities are not available.
4. Use campsites
To avoid damage to nature, pitch your tent at designated campsites with toilet and waste facilities.
5. Respect private property
Avoid using private roads and areas without permission from the landowner. Close gates behind you to prevent livestock from getting out.
6. Use local guides on hikes
Nordfjord is beautiful, but nature can be unpredictable. Local guides ensure safe and memorable exploration of mountains, glaciers and fjords. Always check the weather forecast on Yr before heading out.
7. Be considerate
Show respect for other hikers, local residents and nature. Silence is part of the experience, and it is common to greet people along the trails.
8. Mountain and avalanche safety
Nordfjord has areas with avalanche risk, especially in winter. Plan your trips well, check the avalanche forecast on Varsom and always bring extra clothing and food.
9. Road and traffic safety
The roads can be narrow and winding, so drive carefully and keep to your side of the road. Check traffic updates on Vegvesen for up-to-date information on road conditions. Wear a reflective vest when walking along the road in the dark.
10. Photography and drones
Ask permission before photographing people, and follow the applicable rules for drones. Drones can disturb both wildlife and local residents.
