Oldedalen – Norway’s Most Enchanting Hiking Valley

Oldevatnet robåt

A deep valley surrounded by magical mountains

In Oldedalen, the turquoise waters of Oldevatnet shimmer at the foot of towering peaks, fed by glacial meltwater. Each season brings its own charm, yet the raw nature remains constant. Whether it’s sheep grazing in alpine meadows, waterfalls thundering down the mountainsides, or mist drifting like a veil across the ever-changing lake, there is always something new to discover in what many call Norway’s most enchanting hiking valley. It is nearly impossible to pass through Oldedalen without carrying home a lasting impression.

Oldedalen is part of the Nordfjord region, just south of Olden in Stryn municipality. The valley is surrounded by Jostedalsbreen National Park, home to mainland Europe’s largest glacier.

Several glacier arms descend dramatically into the valley, including Briksdalsbreen, Melkevollsbreen and Brenndalsbreen. Between steep mountains and deep valleys lie the emerald waters of Oldevatnet and the glacial river Oldenelva, which flows through the valley into the Nordfjord.

The famous “Olden” mineral water is also sourced here from the Blåfjell spring. Simply driving through Oldedalen feels like stepping into a fairytale.

Briksdalen valley and Briksdalsbreen glacier

At the inner end of Oldedalen, the spectacular Briksdalsbreen glacier stretches down from Jostedalsbreen National Park into the lush and narrow Briksdalen valley. It is an awe-inspiring sight that attracts visitors from around the world every year.

The glacier arm plunges approximately 1,200 metres down the mountainside. Standing below it, it’s hard to grasp the immense ice mass that continues high above, beyond what the eye can see.

A well-maintained hiking trail leads all the way to the glacier, making it accessible for many visitors. In Briksdalen, you will also find mountain lodges, cabins and apartments for accommodation. Here, you can witness firsthand how the glacier has shaped the dramatic landscape over thousands of years.
