Getting ill or injured while travelling can be challenging. Here you will find important information about how the healthcare system works in Norway, and who to contact if you need medical help during your stay in Nordfjord.
Do you need emergency help?
Life-threatening situation? Call 113
Call 113 in case of serious illness or injury, such as chest pain, breathing difficulties, serious accidents, or unconsciousness. This is the emergency number for an ambulance.
Urgent, but not life-threatening? Call 116 117
If you need medical assistance that cannot wait until your GP’s office is open, call 116 117.
You will then be connected to the nearest out-of-hours emergency clinic (legevakt) where you are staying.
If you are unsure, you can also call 116 117 for advice.
Important to know about medicines in Norway
Please note that some medicines that are available over the counter in other countries require a prescription in Norway. This may, for example, apply to certain strong painkillers, antibiotics and other medicines. Pharmacies in Norway generally have limited opening hours compared to many other countries. Check opening hours in advance, especially on weekends and public holidays.
We recommend that you:
-
Bring any necessary medicines for your entire stay
- Bring documentation of your prescription if you use regular medication
Healthcare for tourists
If you are a citizen of the EU/EEA, you should bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles you to necessary healthcare on the same terms as Norwegian residents. Travellers from countries outside the EU/EEA must, as a general rule, pay for treatment themselves. We recommend that you have valid travel insurance.
