Holvikejekta is the only large open clinker-built jekt in existence. Here you can experience the past by allowing your senses to be awakened by authentic scents from a bygone era. Ramps along the walls of the building allow you to see both below and above the deck of the jekt. You’ll find the new museum building just west of Sandane.
Holvikejekta was built using the same techniques as the Viking ships. The boat is from 1881, and is evidence of the important trade that took place between Nordfjord and Bergen. Holvikejekta was used for carrying timber and firewood to Bergen, and bringing back flour, sugar, clothing and other city goods. Holvikejekta is 20 meters long and 8.6 meters wide, and was among the largest of its kind. Of the many large jekts that sailed along the coast, Holvikejekta is the only one that has been

In the same building, you’ll also find an exhibition about Nordfjord boats, allowing you to learn about Nordfjord’s 1000-year-old boat history. Different boats are still being built in the Nordfjord region.
Season:
The museum opened 6. June, and remains open through the summer season, and the rest of the year for groups on request, starting from the autumn of 2025. Please visit our website for more information on opening hours.
Accessibility:
The museum offers accessible parking near the entrance. The building is universally designed, and has a lift. We do not have hearing loops. There are also no tactile guidance or direction for the visually impaired.
A short 5-minute drive from the jekt, you’ll find the Nordfjord Museum of Cultural History –where you can take a journey through time in Nordfjord. A visit here is included in your Holvikejekta ticket.
Sandane has plenty to offer, and we recommend visiting the beautiful Trivselsskogen hiking area, and enjoying a meal at the Gloppen Hotel, known for its excellent local cuisine.
